Recurve Crossbow Buying Guide
Recurve crossbows resemble the old traditional medieval crossbows that you're used to seeing on TV or in history books. They usually have a bit less power than a compound crossbow but don't worry they still pack a punch and are used for hunting in places where it is legal.
In this guide, we are going to give you a general overview of what to expect when it comes to owning and using a recurve crossbow.
Who Are They Targeted Towards?
Recurve crossbows are popular among hunters due to their simplicity, reliability, and ease of maintenance. They are particularly favoured for small to medium game hunting, as their power and accuracy are well-suited for this purpose.
Due to their simpler design and generally lower draw weight, recurve crossbows are also often recommended for youth and beginners. They provide a good introduction to crossbow shooting without the complexity of compound crossbows.
How Powerful Are Recurve Crossbows?
The draw weight of a recurve crossbow typically ranges from around 75 pounds to over 200 pounds. Higher draw weights generally result in more powerful shots, with greater kinetic energy imparted to the bolt.
The speed at which the bolt is propelled from the crossbow is a key measure of its power. Recurve crossbows can shoot bolts at speeds ranging from about 200 feet per second (fps) to over 400 fps. Higher bolt speeds result in flatter trajectories and increased penetration.
Assembling & Maintaining Your Recurve Crossbow
Recurve crossbows are usually easier to maintain than a compound crossbow as there are fewer mechanical parts. With a recurve crossbow you could potentially do maintenance with very few tools.
